Debaras Turtle Watch

Join a small group on an overnight camp and participate in a conservation process. Grande Anse, about 10km north of Dennery on the east coast, is one of the most important beaches in the region for nesting sea turtles.

Pounded by a dramatic (and dangerous) surf, this ruggedly beautiful spot has never been developed, and the only signs of human habitation are the lights of the village of Desbarras that twinkle up on the distant hillside once night falls.

Most of the time the beach is empty, but from March to August a steady trickle of visitors make the dirt-track truck ride to experience a true natural wonder – the spectacle of leatherback turtles, the world’s largest living reptiles, coming ashore to lay their eggs.

Fond Doux Estate

Fond Doux Estate, two miles from Soufriere, St. Lucia's most scenic town, is nestled in one of the most tranquil spots in St. Lucia. It was one of the earliest estates established by the French in the land grants of 1745 and 1763.

The Estate comprises three trails: The Fond Doux Estate Trail, which is a gentle walk through part of the cultivated area. The Chateaubelair Hill Trail requires some climbing and is rather strenuous. It takes the climber to the high point of the Estate on the Chateaubelair ridge where one can view the famous Soufriere Piton.

The third, the East Ruins Trail, is a gentle incline that takes you to the old ruins in just five (5) minutes. At Fond Doux Estate one can view various activities including traditional cocoa dancing. A delicious lunch is also provided.

Welcome to Soufriere Gros Piton Trail

As you proceed to the summit, experience a breathtaking, panoramic view of the Choiseul village, Petit Piton, and the entire southern-western part of the island. The trail begins in the community of Fond Gens Libre, which translates into "Village of the Free People".

Numerous Brigand sites can be seen including caves, tunnels, signal stations, look-outs and landing sites. The community of Fond Gens Libre manages the Gros Piton Nature Trail in collaboration with the Department of Forestry. The hike is moerate to strenuous, and takes about four (4) hours round-trip.

Saint Lucia Gros Piton Nature Trail Climb

Not far from the Piton are the Sulphur Springs, a seven-acre crater billed as the Caribbean’s only drive –in volcano. A walk through the crater takes you past pools and hot springs bubbling and belching with sulphur-laden steam. Just outside the springs, you can bathe in the warm sulphuric river, noted for its soothing effect. The Piton and the Sulphur Springs are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, designated for its geological importance.

This part of St.Lucia tells the story of the creation of the entire Caribbean Basin. Nearby are the Diamond Botanical Gardens Waterfall and Mineral Baths. Originally built in 1785 with funds from King Louis XVI, the baths were intended to restore the health of battle weary soldiers fighting the insurgents in the Haitian war of independence. The bath have been rebuilt, and, for a small fee, you may visit the waterfall and gardens and enjoy a steaming, healthful bath.

Soufriere Estate offers another glimpse into the history of St.Lucia. The property was part of a 2,000 acre estate granted to the Devaux family by King Louis XIV in 1713.

Morne Coubaril, the first major estate established in St.Lucia, has recreated the old way of life on a West Indian plantation. A tour around the estate will acquaint you with the traditional ways of processing of cocoa, copra and sugar before the days of mechanization. There is also a museum.

Union Nature Trail & Mini Zoo

The Hillside trail is a 1 mile (1.6km) loop, that reaches at the highest point of 350 feet in elevation. This allows a 2 hour walk through a tropical dry forest environment. This trail is recommended for those who are willing and able to do some moderate step climbing over some rough terrain. The Garden Trail takes you on a leisurely walk through a medicinal herb garden, which covers a 0.5 mile (0.8km) loop.

The Mini Zoo includes a number of indigenous as well as exotic species.  The Agouti is an example of an indigenous animal. The St. Lucia Parrot is not only indigenous but it is also endemic, meaning that it can only be found in St. Lucia and nowhere else in the world. Exotic species are species that do not occur naturally on our island, for example the Green Monkey or the Orange Winged Parrots in the zoo.
